The experts talk about EPS (expanded polystyrene), which is also known by its brand name of Styroporor® Porozell®. Its secret is that it contains 98 per cent air - only the remaining two per cent are the polystyrene surrounding the air bubbles.
EPS is therefore extremely light, an excellent insulator against heat and cold, and resistant to impact and chemical attack. It is not therefore surprising that EPS is often referred to as the
"pearl of the plastics".
EPS cell-structureHIRSCH's energy-saving machines ensure that EPS processing is as eco-friendly as possible. The raw material is expanded by applying steam, which not only makes the product itself, but also production pollution free.
After its useful life as a shape molded part - no matter whether as packaging for sensitive electronics, as a component for vehicle dashboards or as a shipping container for perishable foodstuffs - EPS is completely recyclable. It then goes on to start a new life in such products as insulating materials or lightweight concrete. The fact that it is so simple to recycle makes post-consumer EPS a much sought-after 'raw material'.
Whatever its form - be it new or recycled - EPS also plays an active role in environmental protection when used as insulating material in the building industry. Here the benefits of low energy consumption during production and transport are combined with high energy-saving effects from its excellent insulating properties.
